It's not known for sure when the checkerboard started being used in man-made objects but we do know that weavers have a long history of using the checkerboard pattern.
For me the checkerboard pattern takes me right back to when I was first introduced to Ska music. Used as a graphic symbol of the Ska scene bringing together people as a statement against racial segregation, it was on album covers as well as in the fashion we wore.
More recently, I've seen Abby O'Brien wear the checker pattern in Series 5 of Chesapeake Shores and in Netflix's dark fairy tale Nightbooks, there's one scene where we get to see that Alex is wearing checkered pumps.
What is the checkerboard pattern?
The checker is a pattern of stripes with crossed horizontal and vertical lines which form squares. Typically the checker pattern contains two colours where a single checker (a single square within the check pattern) is surrounded on all four sides by a checker of a different colour. Think chess board and you've got it.
The crochet stitch for the checkerboard pattern is easy.
If you can crochet basic stitches single (US terms)/double (UK terms) crochet you'll have no problem crocheting the checkerboard pattern.
If this is your first time crocheting with the check pattern, a great place to start is this free tutorial from Dream a Little Bigger.
This is also a great resource if you haven't changed colours in your crochet projects before.
