"With You I'g Born Again" is a 1979 duet written by Carol Connors and David Shire that originated on the soundtrack of the 1979 film Fast Break. It was performed past Motown recording artists Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright (credited every bit Syreeta) and became an international hit for the duo, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100[ii] and number two on the UK singles chart.[iii]

History [edit]

The music from Fast Break was credited to David Shire and James DiPasquale, and Carol Connors put words to iv of the songs on the soundtrack album. Connors recalls, "I had written most of the lyrics to 'With Y'all I'k Born Again' in 22 minutes, but I couldn't find two words and it was driving me crazy."[4] The correct words came to her on her manner to an ice foam parlor, where she requested a pencil and paper along with her order. "I had finally plant it—the line I was seeking--'Come up prove me your kindness, in your arms I know I'll discover this'—and I wanted to become it down on paper."[four]

Motown executive Suzanne de Passe chose Wright as Preston'south partner for the ii duets that had been written for the motion-picture show,[5] and each singer also had a solo number to cut for the soundtrack album as well. Connors recalled, "Baton and Syreeta were originally not very fond of the thought of recording together—they each wanted to do their own thing, but this worked out extremely well for both of them."[iv] The reluctant pair were surprised by the success of "With Yous I'grand Born Once again". "Though both liked the song, they never dreamed of it being a hit single."[6]

Connors noted the impression some were left with by the song and Preston. "When David Shire heard Billy Preston play the vocal on the organ, he said to me, 'At present I know why he'southward a star.'" Connors besides shared, "The late smashing Marvin Hamlisch told me that he was in the hairdresser chair when he offset heard the song on the radio and stood direct up in amazement, narrowly missing getting his throat cut by the scissors. True story."[iv]

Merely radio airplay and record sales almost never happened. The Fast Interruption soundtrack was released in early 1979, when disco still permeated the airwaves, and the other of the duo'due south recordings from the anthology, the trip the light fantastic toe tune "Go for Information technology", was chosen as the single that would exist issued to promote the album. That selection barely fabricated a dent in the charts, spending one calendar week on the Disco singles chart at number 80 in Billboard magazine[7] and "bubbling under" the Billboard Hot 100 for i week at number 108.[2]

The movie did not get much attention, either, and Preston described their next effort to give "With You I'm Born Again" more exposure, explaining that "afterward the picture didn't do very well, the [soundtrack] album didn't sell well. Nosotros pulled it off that album and put it on mine."[vi] Preston's album, Late at Night, came out later in 1979, but fifty-fifty with that reissue of the song, Preston insisted that "nosotros however didn't call back of it as a unmarried."[6] It did, however, begin to get airplay in the European market place[half dozen] and was finally released as a single at the end of the yr.

Another hurdle the song had to overcome was the fact that its championship did non click with some tape buyers. "Connors says her just regret about 'With You lot I'm Born Again' is that she didn't title it 'Come Bring Me Your Softness'. 'Berry Gordy called me to allow me know we had a monster hitting on our easily but that early on many people were going into record stores request for "Come Bring Me Your Softness", and some tape sales were lost as a result.'"[iv] The fact that the phrase "born again" is oft associated with Christianity may have too been confusing, and Connors admitted, "Many thought the song had religious overtones, only Robert Culp and I were lovers at the time, and that'south the way we felt about one another. Culp was the inspiration."[4] The singers also felt the song could be interpreted in a religious context as well as existence a romantic dearest song. Preston explained, "When we saw Fast Break, nosotros understood it was a romantic song. Just I retrieve of it as religious considering God is dearest, so it all inter-relates."[vi] This religious attribute would afterward exist played up past the prove Glee in the season two episode "Duets", when the characters Finn Hudson (played by Cory Monteith) and Rachel Berry (played by Lea Michele) perform a shortened version of the vocal dressed as a priest and a Catholic schoolgirl respectively.

Nautical chart success [edit]

"With Y'all I'thousand Born Over again" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the issue of the magazine dated December viii, 1979, and peaked at number 4 over the course of 29 weeks.[2] The following calendar week marked its offset appearance on the Britain singles chart[viii] and on Billboard'south list of the fifty nearly popular Adult Gimmicky songs in the U.S., and both nautical chart runs resulted in a number ii showing.[9] [3] It also started three weeks on the magazine'south Hot Soul Singles nautical chart in the Jan 19, 1980, effect and got as high every bit number 86.[10] Information technology was Preston's biggest hit in v years and the biggest popular striking of Wright'south career.
